The bench headed by CJI NV Ramanna granted interim protection to SAD( Shiromani Akali Dal) leader Bikram Majitha from a drug case registered against him by Punjab police until 31st January 2022. Majithia’s application for anticipatory bail was denied by the High Court on January 24, but he was granted interim protection for three days while he filed his appeal with the Supreme Court. The drug case dates back to 2013, and an FIR was filed in 2018 based on a report from a special task team that was presented to the High Court.
The petition stated, “The present matter is political in nature and has been registered with a malafide objective to attack the petitioner, who is the mainstream leader of the opposition party, one month before the State’s polls.”The State of Punjab should not adopt any coercive measures till the top court hears Majithia’s anticipatory bail request on Monday next week, as per the bench led by Chief Justice of India NV Ramana.
“Tell your state that nothing should be done. On Monday, January 31st, we shall hear the case “Senior Counsel P Chidambaram, who appeared on behalf of the Punjab government, was told by the CJI. This came when Majithia’s lawyer, Senior Counsel Mukul Rohatgi, referenced Majithia’s anticipatory bail application and claimed it was a case of political vendetta. Rohatgi stated, “This is a case of political vendetta. “I’m not sure if this is election fever or a virus. Everyone is rushing to the courthouse right now “The CJI made a statement.
