With the intention to fill the rising vacancies in the High Court, the collegium of the Supreme Court has recommended 68 names for further elevation as judges of 12 HC to the Central Government.
The 3-member collegium which comprised the CJI NV Ramana, Judge UU Lalit and Justice AM Khanwilkar cleared the names in the meeting that was held on August 24 and September 1. The Statements mentioning the recommendations were posted on the official website of the Supreme Court last night.
Recommendations will be final if approved by the Central Government.
Of those 68 names, 12 names are reiterated, including names of 9 advocates and 3 judicial officers for the 5 HC. These names were previously returned to the collegium for consideration by the Union ministry of law and justice.
Recommendations have been made to the High Courts of Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Allahabad, Punjab & Haryana, Calcutta, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh, Gauhati, Madras, Kerala and Jammu & Kashmir.
Most of these recommendations are made for the Allahabad HC. The names of 13 advocates have been nominated and the names of 3 judicial officers have been ingeminated for the HC of Allahabad. 10 names have been nominated for the Calcutta HC and 8 for the Kerala HC.
Out of the total of recommended names, 44 are advocates and 24 are judicial officers. According to the latest figures, the high courts have total of 465 vacancies as compared to the total strength of 1089 judges.
